Roof Terrace Restaurant
8/3/2010
In coincidence with our anniversary, we took Margaret to DC to spend the night and to see Mary Poppins at the Kennedy Center. We stayed at the Doubletree on New Hampshire Ave NW in DC. Dinner was at the Roof Terrace Restaurant in the Kennedy Center.
We took Buddy to the Kennel and then left Margaret’s at 1145. We stopped in Cambridge at Snappers Restaurant for lunch. We checked into the Doubletree Hotel on New Hampshire NW at about 1600. We went to the Roof Terrace Restaurant and Bar on the south end of the building for dinner. The performance of Mary Poppins was excellent. Wednesday morning, the GPS took us through downtown Washington. We stopped at Denny's for brunch and had Margaret at her house by 1330.
From the Doubletree Hotel, the bellman arranged a car to take us, and Margaret's wheelchair, the short distance to the Kennedy Center. He dropped us at the Concert Hall entrance, the south end of the building and the closest to the restaurant. We took an elevator to the top floor and it was a short walk to the restaurant. We had a nice table near the window overlooking the Potomac. The restaurant offered a prix fixe menu, but we elected to order ala carte. We started with drinks, of course. Lyd and Margaret each ordered a Dewar's and Soda (6). I selected my Maker's Mark Manhattan, up, but it came on the rocks (9). Lyd and Margaret opted to share a cup of chilled Avocado and Cucumber Soup with red onion, basil and olive oil (9), but found it lacking. I chose a Caesar Wedge Salad, with chopped egg, roasted garlic, bocarones, parmesan reggiano and crostini (11) and it was excellent. Lyd and Margaret each selected Grilled Beef Tenderloin, with roasted new potatoes, baby carrots, haricots verts and cabernet reduction (32) and found it excellent. I picked the Pan Seared Pacific Halibut with mushy peas, curry butter and pea tendrils (32) and it was superb. During dinner, the view outside was a steady stream of aircraft entering the arrival pattern for Reagan airport, just south of the city. For dessert, I had a second Maker's Mark Manhattan, up, which did indeed come "up" (10). Lyd selected a Chocolate English Tea Cake with milk chocolate mousse, toffee and chocolate sauce (11). Margaret had the Bergamot & Lemon Curd Tart, with Citrus Anglaise, white chocolate and fresh berries (11). We all shared the three desserts and they were quite good. After dinner it was on to the Opera House at the north end of the building
