JURY DUTY
Mon, Aug 30, 2010
Tom had Jury Duty with Wicomico County for a maximum of ten days during the month of August. Each evening, it was necessary to call the Code-A-Phone to learn the next day's responsibilities. For reporting 4 times, we received a check for $60.00
Mon, Aug 30 I called the Jury Office and was told that I'm not needed tomorrow, so I'm finished for this round of Jury Duty.
Fri, Aug 27 I'm excused for Monday, the 30th and must check on Tuesday, the 31st.
Wed, Aug 25 At 0900, the jury commissioner divided us in half and my half went to courtroom 3 on the 4th floor. As we filed in, the judge was conferring with the attorneys. These conversations are blocked by white noise. The jury commissioner distributed lists of the jurors to the various courtroom officials. She then joined the conference at the bench. Moments later she picked up those same lists. With the white sound turned off, the judge explained. The defendant had just waived her right to a jury trial and was pleading guilty to Count 4 of the indictment, to wit: Guilty of conspiracy to commit grand theft in the amount exceeding $1,000 but not exceeding $10,000. The judge excused us and told us to call over the weekend for Monday's instructions. By 0922, I was out of the courthouse. I need to call this weekend to get Monday's Instructions
Tue, Aug 24 The Code-A-Phone requires I report Tuesday morning at 0830 for Jury Duty.
Mon, Aug 23 I'm excused for Tuesday, the 24th and must check on Tuesday for Wednesday, the 25th.
Fri, Aug 20 I'm excused for Monday, the 23rd and must check on Monday for Tuesday, the 24th.
Tue, Aug 17 I reported at 0830 and shortly thereafter, the entire group of 60-80 went upstairs to courtroom #2. It seems the defendant, back in 1997-1998 was charged with several accounts of child abuse, sexual abuse, etc. and has requested a jury trial. The judge proceeded to voir dire the jury. We were asked if: 1) we knew the defendant, 2) knew the lawyers, 3) had ever been a defendant, victim or witness in a child abuse case, 4) had ever been a member of law enforcement, 5) believed a cop over another witness, just because he was a cop, 6) had any religious or moral convictions that would not allow us to form a verdict, 7) knew any of the witnesses. As the group responded to each question, individual members stood. They, in turn, went before the judge to explain their answer to that particular question. When that was completed, individual jurors were called, alphabetically and, depending on the whims of either the defense or the prosecution, either seated or excused. They ended up with a complete jury long before getting near the letter "W" and the rest of us were excused. On the way out, we were told we wouldn't be needed anymore this week and to check over the weekend for Monday's orders.
Mon, Aug 16 The Code-A-Phone orders a report for Tuesday, 8/17.
Sun, Aug 15 I'm excused for Monday, the 16th and must check on Monday for Tuesday, the 17th.
Wed, Aug 11 I reported to the courthouse at 0830. By 0930, one case had gone to a bench trial and the other had been postponed, so we were released and told to check back Sunday, 8/15, for Monday, 8/16.
Tue, Aug 10 The Code-A-Phone orders a report for Wednesday, 8/11.
Mon, Aug 9 The Code-A-Phone excuses on Tuesday, 8/10, but a call Tuesday evening is needed about Wednesday, 8/11.
Fri, Aug 6 The Code-A-Phone excuses on Monday, 8/9, but a call Monday evening is needed about Tuesday, 8/10.
Mon, Aug 9 I'm subject to an order to report, depending on what is on the Code-A-Phone over the weekend.
Mon, Aug 2 I parked in the municipal garage and walked over to the court house, too early it seems. We’re not admitted before 0800. By 0840, we had in excess of 70 in the jury assembly room. We watched an orientation video. Whereas the only jury being seated today will go more than one day, I was excused around 9 and told to report back on Monday, the 9th.
Fri, Jul 30 The Code-A-Phone orders my group to report Monday morning, 8/2 at 0830.
Fri, Jul 2 I spoke with Barbara Hill in the court office and she excused me for Aug 3-5.
Wed, Jun 30 A summons for jury duty for the Circuit Court of Wicomico County arrived in the mail.
