Panasonic Academic Challenge - 2007

Monday, June 25, 2007

The 20th Panasonic Academic Challenge, Tom's 10th, was at the Contemporary Resort at Walt Disney World. This annual event is a competition among states and territories of the United States giving us yet another opportunity to enjoy the fine WDW cuisine with Kate and Sal.

This morning, Kate and Sal enjoyed a two-hour Tour of the World aboard Segways at EPCOT and insisted that Lyd and I do this on another visit. On this second day of competition, Rounds 3 and 4 was contested and completed at 1430. Tom was a coordinating judge, today. The dinner was at Flying Fish.

FLYING FISH

Beverages

Tom enjoyed 2 manhattans, the 2nd made with Maker's Mark (7/7.75)

Lyd ordered a martini. Dale mis-communicated with Larry, so she ended up with a vodka martini. When Dale discovered the error, she received a gin martini as well! (7)

Chef Tony then shared a marvelous concoction of sauteed peaches, Morel mushrooms with truffled mascarpone cheese risotto in chive oil.

Starters

Tom, Sal and Kate all opted for the Crispy Sesame and Togarashi Scented Calamari Spiced Green Papaya & Vegetable Salad, Asian Dipping Sauce (13). [The sauce has been changed from the Vietnamese Dipping Sauce, described here, which Tom prefers] Lyd loves the Chardonnay-steamed Penn Cove Mussels Fennel, Chilies, Pesto Crèma, Sourdough Crostini (13)

Entrées

Tom, Lyd and Kate got the last three available orders of the Chef's Special "Thunder" Entree of Pan-seared Chesapeake Bay Striped Bass with Maine Lobster, Summer Succotash, Tiny Tomatoes, Lobster & Roasted Corn Butter Sauce (34) Sal selected the Potato-wrapped Red Snapper with Creamy Leak Fondue, Red Wine Butter Sauce (34)
With a crew of Larry, Wade, and Dale, the service at the "High Bar" was excellent and the evening a success.
