We're sailing to and from New Orleans, aboard the "Queen of the Mississippi" on our 2nd cruise with American Cruise Lines.
At 0900, we went ashore on the bow ramp and walked over the levee. On the other side, local sheriff’s deputies stopped traffic to let us cross into Oak Alley Plantation. The Plantation is a fully functioning sugar plantation which reached its peak before the Civil War. Opulent parties were given in the dining room which had an overhead fan operated by a slave boy. The owner set out adjustable candles. Once they burned down to the preset height, it was time to go. Once the slaves (113 total, 20 in the house) were gone, the plantation struggled. We spent an hour on a guided tour, culminating in snacks sponsored by the cruise lines. We then walked back to the boat.
