We puttered about the room until 1130 and, having packed for the train, we checked out, putting our bags into storage. We had missed the shuttle into town, so we took a cab (20) for the short ride into Jasper. We decided on O’Shea restaurant. We split a carafe of merlot. Lew had a prime rib dip (15.95) with fries, and I had a buffalo burger (14.25) with some of the best onion rings in North America! We bought at 12" totem as our official souvenier. We walked the 2 blocks back to the center of Jasper and caught the 1415 shuttle bus back to Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge. There, we rested in the lobby until our driver collected us at 1430 to transfer us back to the train station. We checked in and met, Mark, the Via Rail Station manager who announced that he was our host for the afternoon and took us to the Prestige passenger waiting area, ejecting a young squatter who had commandeered the electrics for recharging his devices. Train #2, The Canadian, arrived about 1745, from Vancouver. We boarded and settled into 230-C, meeting our concierge team of Claudia, Gabriel and Marty. There are 14 of us in Prestige Class, in 6 cabins each on cars 230 and 231. There is one additional cabin in car 239, trailing our car and the last in the consist. Car 239 is also the Park Car, or Bullet Car, as it is known, for it's shape. For most of the day, The Park Car is restricted to just the Prestige Class passengers; only opening to the other passengers after 1400. Our dining car is just forward of our sleeper car, so we only use the last 4 cars of a 28 car consist being driven by 3 locomotives. By 1900, we were rolling out of Jasper. We went to the dining car for first seating of dinner and enjoyed an ahi tuna amuse bouche followed by roasted rack of lamb and a nice merlot. We finished with chocolate cake and returned to our cabin, which had already been made up for the night. The cabin features "L-shaped" coaches by day and a pull-down double (murphy) bed by night. Movement is so restricted, that, by night, Lew had to climb over me to get to the bathroom. By 2130, we were in bed.
