At 0640, it’s 41o in Jasper, AB at the Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge. We snacked on the breads and other goodies from our Happy Anniversary package and then called for a cart to take us up to the lobby. We expected to be picked up by Sundog Tours at 0830, but, according to Fred, our driver/guide, his efforts to pick up the first ¾ of the tour, in town, were stymied when several were not where they were supposed to be. Therefore, it was past 9 by the time the 20 of us were headed east and south into Jasper National Park for Maligne Canyon, Medicine Lake and then south to Maligne Lake. The scenery was breath-taking even with the scarred patches of forest fire destruction. We encountered a momma moose and her baby. At Maligne Lake, we took a 90-minute cruise with just under 50 other passengers down to Spirit Island, and views of the glaciers and mountains to the south. Following the cruise, we had sandwiches at the Maligne Lake cafeteria before heading back north. We encountered a female mule deer, feeding, by itself, on the side of the road. Unusual for this time of year, it had no off-spring, as, according to our guide, they had proably been eaten by a bear. We were back at the lodge by 1430, and down for naps at 1500. At 1600, we went back up to the lodge to Orso, for dinner. We returned to the room, and sat outside for a while on our back porch facing the setting sun. By the time we went to bed at 2045 (76o), it had not set.
