||Chocolate-Caramel Layer Squares
14 ounce bag of caramels
2/3 cup evaporated milk
1 18 1/2 oz German Chocolate Cake Mix
3/4 cup butter, softened
1 cup chopped pecans
6 oz semisweet chocolate chips
Preheat oven to 350o|
In the top of a double boiler, combine caramels and 1/2 cup evaporated milk.
Cook, stirring constantly, until caramels have melted.
In a mixing bowl, combine cake mix, remaining 1/3 cup evaporated milk and butter.
Mix with an electric mixer until dough sticks together.
Stir in pecans.
Press half of cake mixture in a greased 9x13x2" pan.
Bake 6 minutes
Remove from oven and sprinkle chocolate chips over crust.
Pour caramel mixture over chocolate, spreading evenly.
Crumble remaining cake mmixture over caramel ,mixture.
Return pan to oven and bake 15-18 minute.
Remove from oven and cool.
Chill in refrigerator fo 40 minutes.
Cut into small bars.
2017-01-28: our first batch used caramel candies and devil's food cake and a 13"x13" pan. Next time we'll use caramel syrup and German chocolate cake.
We made cookies with the extra cake dough for ice cream sandwiches.|
