Snow Crab Legs
Taken in Alaskan waters, snow crabs are smaller than King Crabs, and all the flesh is in the legs. They are cooked and flash-frozen on the boats. $9.99/pound is a good price in the seafood department of the local super market. They can be served hot or cold, in a salad or as crab cocktail.
Ingredients:
1 to 1 1/2 pounds per person
melted butter
Procedures:
Allow the crab legs to defrost in the fridge for several hours. Be sure to put a container under the package as sea water will collect in the package as defrosting completes.
Sometimes, I shell the crab cold, and collect the flesh in a bowl. It's easier on the fingers, but the flesh tends to come out in smaller pieces.
Or, put a steamer grate in the bottom of a large stock pot with enough water to reach the bottom of the steamer. Put the pot on a burner on high and raise the water to steam. Steam the crab legs (they're already cooked and thawed) for 10 minutes or until heated to the desired temperature.
Serve with the melted butter, a bowl for shells, and crab crackers, hammers, and or pliers to get into the shells.
Notes:
2023-08-19: Steamed earlier in the day, they were shelled cold. Lyd had hers cold, while I reheated mine with butter. We added a bottle of Relax Riesling.
2023-03-18: 4 clusters with a bottle of Barefoot Riesling.
2021-10-30: 4 clusters
2021-09-17: The flour clusters were not that full. Cold shelled, Lyd has hers neat, and I had a small amount of melted butter. All were preceded by a pair of duck foil bras, and accompanied by a bottle of Fetzer Gewurtztraminer.
2021-08-03: 4 class stars were steamed and served with drawn butter.
2021-06-15: 4 clusters, with a mussel appetizer, for my 75th birthday.
