Background

We're spending the day in Rockland.
There's a city tour, lobster boat tour and a
lobster bake luncheon with local entertainment.
We'll sail Friday morning.
|
At 0550, it’s 62 in Rockland, Maine.
We’re told that about 0130, probably due to the changing tides, the gangway fell off of the side of the ship.
Kelly, our newest steward has joined the crew from Oregon.
At 0900, only 3 of us boarded Captain Jack’s small lobster boat for an hour in the harbor, pulling lobster traps.
If a female is pulled with a notched tail, or with eggs, she must be thrown back.
If she has eggs, but her tail is not yet notched, she gets a notch before she is thrown back.
By Maine law, only those with a body between 3.5 and 5 inches can be taken.
The smaller ones are thrown back to grow, and the larger are thrown back as breeders.
They molt annually.
The captain of Captain Jack’s, whose name is Steve, and his stern man, Fred, took about a dozen and threw back twice that number.
The ones they took, about 1.5 pounds each will bring about $4/pound at the dock.
In addition to having gender, lobsters are left or right handed.
There is a longer, thinner shredding claw and a thicker crusher claw.
If the crusher claw is on the right side, it’s a right-handed lobster.
At 1130, we boarded a bus to Sharp’s point for the lobster bake.
Under a tent, we were entertained by “Rusty Hinges” while, in 4 tubs, the dinner baked over an open fire.
Finally, the tubs were dumped into piles of lobsters, corn, and mussels.
Several of the stewards came along to add potato salad, slaw and melted butter.
When we returned to the boat, we were scheduled for the afternoon Owl Museum tour, but eschewed that in favor of naps.
At 1700, I joined a dozen passengers for the Captain’s tour of the pilot house, making us a little late for cocktails.
Dinner was a warm spinach salad for me with Applewood bacon, chopped eggs, tomatoes and Gruyere and Sweet Corn Bisque for Lyd.
We both had the Braised Short Ribs of Beef with Roasted Garlic Mashed Potatoes, and Pan-roasted veggies.
Dessert was Pecan Pie for Lyd and Panna Cotta with Kahlua Glaze for me.
We learned that Cat is looking to join the Air Force when leaving American Cruise Lines.
By 2110, at 66, we were both down for the night.
