1989 In January, we had a three day weekend at Disney World. In February, we renovated the guest room and were then visited by the Engles. We purchased a new Rainbow vacuum cleaner, trading in the old one. In May, we did a Disney Trip on 3 season passes. Lyd, in her 15th year of teaching, was in her 5th year as teacher of the Gifted Life Science in the seventh grade at Stanton College Preparatory School. This was her 7th year teaching Gifted and her 5th in 7th grade Gifted Life Science. I began my 2nd year at Pickett Elementary, and Kate was in the 5th grade at Lone Star Elementary, and was 11. Since I had last Christmas off, in Maryland, this year, 1989, it was my turn to stay home and watch the schools of my friends. On Christmas Eve, a winter storm devastated Jacksonville. Snow melting and freezing into ice was covered by more snow and the city was paralyzed.
1988 The Independence Day weekend was spent at the Sheraton Beach Resort. Newly appointed as principal of Pickett Elementary, we went to Orlando and went to Disney. Lyd and Kate then flew up to Maryland from Orlando. Dr. White doesn't think I can do Brain Brawl, any more. Lyd, in her 14th year of teaching, was in her 4th year as teacher of the Gifted Life Science in the seventh grade at Stanton College Preparatory School. This was her 6th year teaching Gifted and her 4th in 7th grade Gifted Life Science. Kate was in the 4th grade at Lone Star Elementary, 10 years old. Bryan Truitt Laws was born to Jerry and Linda Laws. Christmas was spent at the Farm.
1987 In January, Lyd had Jury Duty in a case of DUI. The jury foreman, who suffered from gout, caused a hung jury in what both the prosecution and defense thought was "open and shut." We purchased an 86 Volvo 244 from Parrish Volvo and a Tandon 286 computer from Megabytes. Kate placed 2nd in the math superstars competition at LoneStar and spent the summer at Greenfield Elementary while Lyd taught at the Superintendent's Junior University. In August, the Test Coordinators meeting was held at Las Palmas, so I could not go to Maryland with Katie and Lyd. Renovation of the back porch by SunRoom Designs was completed while Lyd and Katie were in Maryland. Katie knew of the plans, but kept the secret. Lyd was thrilled by the surprise. At the beginning of the school year, Lyd, in her 13th year of teaching, was in her 3rd year as teacher of the Gifted Life Science in the seventh grade at Stanton College Preparatory School. This was her 5th year teaching Gifted and her 3rd in 7th grade Gifted Life Science. I was in my 4th year as Supervisor of Testing; Kate in the 3rd grade at Lone Star Elementary; 9 years old and I went into my 4th season as the moderator of Brain Brawl. In December, Lisa Marie Engle was born to Bill and Sherry. Xmas was at the farm.
1986 In March, Bill, Sherry and Chris came to visit In April, Jessica Laws was born to Victor and Jean. Lyd, in her 12th year of teaching, was in her 2nd year as teacher of the Gifted Life Science in the seventh grade at Stanton College Preparatory School. This was her 4th year teaching Gifted and her 2nd in 7th grade Gifted Life Science. I was in my 3rd year as Supervisor of Testing; Kate in the 2nd grade at Lone Star Elementary, and 8 years old. I began my 3rd year as moderator of Brain Brawl
1985 In April, the three of us took a vacation to Washington, DC on the train. Margaret & George met us there. Lyd & I saw "My One and Only" at Lincoln Center, as the guests of Margaret & George. Shortly after returning from Washington, It was obvious that Raisin was ill. She died of apparent liver complications and was buried in the back yard at Country Creek. Christopher Engle is born in Denver to Bill and Sherry. Lyd, in her 11th year of teaching, has been offered a position teaching Gifted Life Science, Seventh Grade at Stanton College Prep and has accepted. This is her 3rd year teaching Gifted and her first in 7th grade Gifted Life Science. I am in my 2nd year as supervisor of testing. Kate is in the 1st grade at Normandy Village Elementary, and is 7 years old. I began my 2nd year as moderator of Brain Brawl. In November, Jerry and Linda Laws were married in Huntsville, Alabama, with the three of us in attendance. We joined Margaret and George in Atlanta and rode the same plane to Huntsville. December 20, we moved into the home at 3941 High Pine Rd, in Valley View of The Valley at Hidden Hills. Kate moved from Normandy Village to Lone Star Elementary.
1984 In August, I was appointed as Supervisor of Test Analysis and Reporting for the School System. Kate started school, Kindergarten, with Mrs. Linda Boder as her teacher. Lydia, in her 10th year of teaching, opened her 3rd year of the teacher of the gifted at Stilwell. Katie's 6th birthday party was at Show Biz Pizza. She lost her 1st tooth, pulled by Tina Peeples, and started Dance lessons with Bambi Phillips, of Dorothy Willards Dance Studio We purchased a Ford Escort from Duval Ford. With the departure of Bob Zienta, I took over as moderator of Brain Brawl. Christmas was spent at the farm outside Salisbury.
1983 January 22, Emily Haeussler, my maternal grandmother, died in California. With the beginning of the school year, I began my 3rd year as Coordinator in SIMS and Lydia, in her 9th year of teaching, opens her 2nd year as the teacher of the gifted at Stilwell. Kate is 5 and, in September, Michael Hastings Laws was born to Victor and Jean. In November, Bill and Sherry are wed in Denver. We joined Margaret & George and Victor and Eunice at the ceremony.
1982 In February, after spotting a vacancy notice on the bulletin board at Paxon, I was selected for the position of Coordinator of Student Information Management System (SIMS). In May, with a unanimous vote of the Stilwell administrative team, Lyd has been offered the position of teacher of the gifted for the 1982/1983 school year. Vic & Jean Laws were married in June. With the beginning of the school year, I started my 2nd year as the Coordinator in SIMS and Lydia, in her 8th year of teaching, now teaches the Gifted English and Science program to Gifted 8th and 9th grade students at Stilwell Junior High School. Kate turned 4.
1981 August 3, PATCO went on strike and my career as an Air Traffic Controller is over, just as I am being promoted to GS-14. I found a job as a Guidance Counselor at Paxon High School and Lyd went back to work, in her 7th year of teaching, as a Compensatory Education English teacher at Stilwell Junior High. Katie started daycare at LaPetite Academy on Normandy Blvd just before turning 3.
Lyd was observed on the last day of school before the Christmas Vacation by the Dean of Boys at Stilwell; she was convinced that they were trying to get rid of her.
1980 With the beginning of the school year, Lydia is on leave-of-absence after 6 years of teaching, I have been promoted to GS-13, and, September 16, Kate's 2nd birthday.
